New South Wales

Below is a list of all the pages on this website which are concerned with places in New South Wales, or else something to do with New South Wales. As you can see, there isn't much here yet - I've been focussing on WA, Tas and NZ first - but I plan to add more of my NSW travels eventually.

Dalgety - almost a capital city

When a site was being chosen for Australia's national capital, Canberra wasn't the only candidate. The honour almost fell to the small town of Dalgety, near the NSW Snowy Mountains. I dropped by to have a look at this almost-capital, and found a rural riverside hamlet which could serve as a peaceful base for exploring the area ... and a good spot to see a platypus in the wild.

Ramshead Range in summer

Alpine grassland with summer snowdrifts may not spring to mind when thinking of Australia, but that's what you'll find in the Ramshead Range near Thredbo. This undulating upland with distinctive rocky tors is great for casual wandering, and for camping with a view.

Ramshead Range in winter

The Ramshead Range, close to Thredbo, is a great place to saunter among alpine wildflowers in summer tranquillity. In winter, however, it transforms into a frozen wonderland - wild and icy, yet very accessible to those on skis or snowshoes.

Summer skiing in Australia

Skiers or snowboarders familiar with Australian snow would know just how short the ski seasons can be in this sunburnt land. Australia is the only continent without permanent snow, and once the ski areas have closed in early spring, the idea of skiing in late spring or summer seems absurd. But it can be possible ... if you know where to go, don't mind hiking with your skis, and can accept the limitations of skiing on snow patches.

Sydney Harbour Bridge up close

The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is very popular - but what if you are scared of heights or reluctant to spend over $200 per person to climb the bridge? Fortunately there are other ways to get up close and personal with Sydney's magnificent bridge, enjoying great views at little or no cost.

Tranquillity in Thredbo?

Most people who visit Australia's classiest ski resort, Thredbo, wouldn't describe it as a quiet village. That's because most visit in the ski season or the summer school holidays, when the place is packed. However, if you visit in the off seasons, Thredbo is the epitome of a tranquil mountain village.

Location map - New South Wales

The symbols on this map mark the locations of places I've written about.
